"Digital Xiamen" -Fundamental Spatial Data Mapping Project ---- Undertaken by Supresoft Inc. As part of the 10th Five-year Development Planning of Xiamen Information Port Construction, the Virtual City implementation is the core of the Digital Xiamen project.

This project was initiated since beginning of 2000. Firstly, the aerial photos of the Xiamen Island (Covered area around 170 km2 and totally 758 aerial photos) were shot by February 2001; secondly, the Xiamen fundamental spatial data was produced by June 2001; thirdly, the Xiamen fundamental spatial database was completed by December 2001, and finally the Xiamen City's 3D Model was constructed by March 2002.
After carrying on this project, by making use of the Xiamen Island's aerial photos, Supresoft built a variety of special fundamental databases of the Xiamen City, they are the Xiamen City full-element digital terrain topographic map (DTM) with scale of 1:1000, the digital elevation model (DEM) database, the true color digital orthophoto map (DOM) database, the integrated GIS database and the 3D city model database. In this way, it realized all sets of data systems such as the city modeling and the 3D landscape, becoming a typical example for digital city construction.
The database of this project accommodate a total data volume up to 1000G, which can be used in many fields such as population management, GPS vehicle supervision, telecommunication, power plant, statistics, industry and commerce, insurance, digital communities, city planning, government businessman-inviting & recommendation project simulation, district reconstruction & planning simulation, farming & forestry and environmental protection.
The implementation of the 3D city model of virtual Xiamen, is capable of truly reproducing the detailed and real appearance of Xiamen City including roads, districts, buildings, green belts, water systems and facilities, thus playing the most obvious role in the city planning. For instance, making use of this system, the city planning engineers can simulate the real landscape of the city-planning scheme, facilitating the decision makers selecting the optimal scheme from multiple alternates. In other words, the virtual Xiamen project provides us with fully new concepts on city planning, construction and management as well as a regulating and controlling means. With the help of the virtual Xiamen, we can adapt ourselves to and forecast the changes in Xiamen, thus realizing the sustainable benign development of the Xiamen City. What the virtual Xiamen brings to us is a true revolution toward digitization.
